Election & Candidate Advertising
Ads related to candidates, elections, or political parties require special Google verification
0/6
I understand that any ad promoting a political candidate, political party, or ballot measure requires Google identity verification first
Google does not allow election advertising from unverified accounts — full stop. Before running any ad that mentions a candidate, party, or election, you must complete Google's political advertiser verification process. Without it, all such ads will be disapproved and your account flagged.
Critical
If I intend to run election ads, I have applied for and received Google's political advertiser verification for my country
The verification process requires you to prove your identity and confirm you are legally permitted to run political advertising in your country. In many countries, Google does not allow political ads at all. Check Google's country-specific policy pages before applying.
Critical
My ads do not mention the name of any political candidate — even if the ad is not about politics
Even a passing reference to a politician's name in an ad can trigger this policy. For example, an ad for a book about a former president, or a news-commentary service mentioning an election, can be caught. Remove all candidate names unless you are verified to run political ads.
Critical
My ads do not mention any political party by name, or use party slogans, logos, or colours in a way that suggests political affiliation
Referencing a political party — even to criticise or compare it — is treated as political advertising. This includes well-known party slogans, acronyms, or colour schemes used in a way that clearly associates your ad with that party.
Critical
My ads do not reference any ongoing or upcoming election, referendum, or ballot measure
Ads mentioning "Vote Yes," "Vote No," "Election Day," "General Election," or any specific ballot measure are automatically treated as election advertising and require verification. Remove all such language unless your account is verified for political advertising.
Critical
My ads and landing page include a "Paid for by" disclosure if I am verified and running legitimate political ads
In countries where political advertising is permitted, Google requires all election ads to include a clear "Paid for by [organisation]" disclosure. If this is missing from your verified political ads, they will be disapproved. Add the required disclosure to every ad and check Google's format requirements.
Important
🏛
Government & Policy Topics
Ads that promote views on government decisions, laws, or public policy are treated as political
0/5
My ads do not take a stance on government policies, legislation, or proposed laws
Ads that say things like "Support the new tax bill," "Stop the healthcare reforms," or "Tell your MP to vote against X" are treated as political issue advertising. If your ad is trying to influence people's opinion on a government decision, it requires political advertiser verification.
Critical
My ads do not advocate for or against specific government agencies, military actions, or national security policies
Content that supports or opposes military spending, immigration enforcement, police reform, or specific foreign policy positions — even when framed as news or education — is treated as political advertising by Google and requires verification.
Critical
My landing page does not primarily push a political viewpoint, even if the ad itself appears neutral
Google reviews the page your ad points to. If the ad text is neutral but the landing page is clearly pushing a political agenda, signing petitions, collecting donations for political causes, or promoting political ideology, Google will flag the whole campaign as political advertising.
Critical
If I am advertising a book, podcast, or educational service, I have ensured it does not primarily advocate a political position
Authors, podcasters, and educators are often caught by this policy. Advertising a book that argues for a specific political ideology, or a course teaching "how to win elections," is treated as political advertising. Reframe the ad around the content format, not the political argument.
Important
My ads do not solicit donations for political campaigns, political parties, or political action committees (PACs)
Running ads that ask people to donate to a candidate, a political party, or a politically oriented nonprofit (PAC, Super PAC) is strictly regulated political advertising. Even a "Support our cause" message that directs to a political donation page triggers this policy.
Critical
Socially Sensitive & Controversial Topics
Certain social issues are treated as political by Google even when they appear non-partisan
0/5
My ads do not take a clear stance on highly contested social issues such as abortion, gun control, or immigration
Google classifies a range of social topics as "political issues" even when they are not directly election-related. Ads that advocate a position on abortion rights, gun legislation, immigration policy, or racial justice policy are treated as political advertising and require verification.
Critical
My ads do not use emotionally charged political language designed to provoke a reaction based on political identity
Phrases like "Patriots stand up," "Liberals are destroying our country," "The radical left," or "MAGA supporters" are political identity signals. Even if the product you sell is non-political, using this language in your ad copy will trigger the political content policy.
Critical
If I sell merchandise with political themes (T-shirts, mugs, badges), I have removed or reworded any ad copy that takes a political position
Selling political merchandise is not automatically banned — but the ads promoting that merchandise must not advocate a political position. Describe the product neutrally: "Custom printed tees" rather than "Show your support for [political cause]."
Important
My ads related to climate change, environmental policy, or energy policy are factual and informational — not advocacy
Climate and energy policy are politically classified issues on Google Ads. Ads promoting renewable energy products, electric vehicles, or sustainability services are generally fine — but framing them as "fight climate injustice" or making policy advocacy claims crosses into political territory.
Important
My ad does not target audiences based on political beliefs, party affiliation, or political interest categories
Google restricts certain audience targeting options for political content. Even if your ad text is neutral, targeting your campaign at people who have shown interest in specific political parties, election-related content, or politically classified social issues may trigger a policy violation.

🏢
Your Business & Identity
Google needs to verify who is behind political advertising before allowing it
0/5
My Google Ads account accurately represents my real organisation and is not anonymised or hidden behind a generic name
Political transparency is a core requirement. If your account name, business identity, or payment details do not reflect a real, verifiable organisation, Google will flag this as a transparency violation — especially for any content that touches political topics.
Critical
My organisation is legally permitted to advertise on political topics in the country I am targeting
Many countries have laws that restrict who can run political advertising. Foreign entities, anonymous donors, and certain types of organisations are prohibited from running election or political issue ads in many jurisdictions. Confirm that your organisation is legally eligible before running any political content.
Critical
I am not running political ads on behalf of a client without that client completing their own Google political verification
Agencies cannot run election ads on behalf of a political client using a generic agency account. The political verification must be completed by the actual organisation whose ads are being run. Each political advertiser needs their own verified account.
Critical
My website has a clear "About Us" page that identifies who I am and what my organisation does
Political transparency extends to your website. Google's reviewers check your landing page and site for any signs of hidden identity or deceptive affiliation. A clear, honest "About Us" page showing who runs the organisation is essential for any account touching political topics.
Important
I am not using a VPN, proxy, or misleading billing address to disguise my location and bypass country-specific political ad restrictions
Google enforces political advertising rules on a country-by-country basis. Using a VPN or falsifying your billing country to access political advertising permissions that are not available in your actual country is a serious violation that can result in a permanent ban.
Critical
🚫
Misinformation & Manipulative Content
Political ads that spread false information or use deceptive tactics are permanently banned
0/5
My ads do not make provably false claims about political candidates, parties, or election processes
Making false factual claims about a political candidate — their record, statements, or background — or spreading misinformation about how to vote, election dates, or registration requirements is a severe violation. These are not eligible for appeal and result in permanent suspension.
Critical
My ads do not use manipulated or deepfake images or videos of political figures
Using AI-generated or digitally manipulated images of politicians, doctored audio recordings, or misleading out-of-context clips is a severe policy violation. This includes "satire" that could realistically be mistaken for real statements or events. Google has zero tolerance for manipulated media in political advertising.
Critical
My ads do not discourage people from voting or imply that voting is dangerous, pointless, or fraudulent
Content that tells people not to vote, implies that elections are rigged or that votes won't count, or spreads fear around the voting process is treated as voter suppression content. This results in immediate permanent account suspension with no appeal path.
Critical
My ads do not contain conspiracy theories, unverified election fraud claims, or content undermining confidence in democratic institutions
Claims that elections were "stolen," that ballot counting is fraudulent, or that democratic processes are illegitimate — even presented as opinion or question — are treated as political misinformation. Google has explicitly banned this category of content since 2020 with no reinstatement option.
Critical
My ads do not impersonate a government official, election authority, or news organisation to give my political content false credibility
Using logos, names, or visual styles associated with official election bodies, government departments, or trusted news organisations to make political ads appear more authoritative is impersonation. This triggers both the political content policy and the misrepresentation policy simultaneously.

Your Appeal & Next Steps
Before submitting an appeal, these steps are essential — political violations have very limited appeal options
0/4
I have paused or removed every ad and campaign that contains political content, and confirmed none are still running
Do not submit an appeal while the offending ads are still live. Google's review team checks your active campaigns when processing an appeal. Any political content still running — even in a paused campaign that is still visible — will result in immediate rejection of your appeal.
Critical
I understand whether my violation is appealable — some political content violations result in a permanent ban with no appeal
Misinformation, voter suppression, manipulated media, and election interference violations are permanent and cannot be appealed. Violations for simply not having political verification are appealable once you are verified or have removed the political content. Identify which type you have before investing time in an appeal.
Critical
My appeal clearly explains which specific content was political, that it has been removed, and confirms I will not run political content without proper verification in future
A strong appeal states: (1) exactly which ad or landing page content was considered political, (2) that it has been removed or revised, (3) that you understand why it violated policy, and (4) that you commit to only running political content through the verified process going forward.
Critical
I have audited every other campaign in my account to confirm no other ads touch political topics, even indirectly
Google will review your entire account when processing a political content appeal — not just the flagged campaign. Any other ads with even a tangential political element will cause your appeal to be rejected. Do a complete account audit before submitting.
